چکیده

In the last years, numerical simulation has seen a great development thanks to costs reduction and speed increases of the computational systems. With these improvements, the mathematical algorithms are able to work properly with more realistic problems. Nowadays, the solution of a problem using numerical simulation is not just finding a result, but also to ensure the quality. However, can we say that the model results are correct regarding the behaviour of the system? In other words, how could we quantify the similarity between reality and simulations? To answer these questions, it is necessary to establish a validation criterion that allows an objective quantification of the difference between the results and the reality. Another way to say this is, how “true” our results are. In the case of numerical methods, the main objective is to replicate as closely as possible the behaviour of the "real" world through numbers. Normally, the results of the numerical methods are expressed in terms of graphics, pictures, etc. These results represent the view of reality that the chosen method provides (Oñate, 1998). In order to affirm that the result of a numerical solution is fully consistent with the reality, it must be satisfied that: a. The mathematical model must incorporate all aspects of the real world. b. The numerical method has to solve exactly the equations of the mathematical modelling. The problem starts with these two conditions that guarantee the "truth" of the results, since none of them are fully accomplished and it must be admitted that the numerical prediction never completely matches the "real" world behaviour. Then you can only be sure that the numerical solution is a good approximation of the reality. Now, new questions arise: How much does the result obtained by a numerical method resemble the reality? How can we objectively quantify this similarity? The answers to these questions are those that give rise to the validation methods.

Verification and Validation of Common Derivative Terms Approximation in Meshfree Numerical Scheme

In order to improve the approximation of spatial derivatives without meshes, a set of meshfree numerical schemes for derivative terms is developed, which is compatible with the coordinates of Cartesian, cylindrical, and spherical. Based on the comparisons between numerical and theoretical solutions, errors and convergences are assessed by a posteriori method, which shows that the approximations...

Cross{validation of Numerical Schemes for Extended Hydrodynamical Models of Semiconductors

The numerical integration of the hydrodynamical model of semiconductors based on Extended Thermodynamics has been tackled. On account of the mathematical complexity of the system no theoretical conditions of convergence are available for the existing schemes. Therefore in order to lend conndence to the obtained numerical solution it was almost mandatory to resort to a cross-validation comparing...

Statistical validation of event predictors: a comparative study based on the field of seizure prediction.

The prediction of events is of substantial interest in many research areas. To evaluate the performance of prediction methods, the statistical validation of these methods is of utmost importance. Here, we compare an analytical validation method to numerical approaches that are based on Monte Carlo simulations. The comparison is performed in the field of the prediction of epileptic seizures. In ...

Analytical and Numerical Investigation of Four-roll Bending

Four-roll bending process is usually used for manufacturing of seamed thick-walled and thin-walled cylinders. Due to complexity of this process, the analytical solution of plate bending in this process has not been developed completely. The existence of friction and multi-step processing makes it more difficult. Investigation of four-roll bending process using analytical and numerical methods i...

Cross-validation and Bootstrap for Optimizing the Number of Units of Competitive Associative Nets

Cross-validation and bootstrap, or resampling methods in general, are examined for applying them to optimizing the number of units of competitive associative nets called CAN2. There are a number of resampling methods available, but the performance depends on the neural network to be applied and functions to be learned. So, we apply several resampling methods to the CAN2 which has been shown eff...
